# Why new athletes get a "set your password" email

> Understand the automatic password-setup email every new athlete receives, and why it looks like a password reset.

Whenever a new athlete account is created, CoachIQ automatically sends them an email to set their password. This is a normal, expected part of first-time account activation, not a sign that anything has gone wrong with your account or theirs.

## When this email is sent

The email fires automatically the first time an athlete's account is created, whether that happens because:

* You add them manually from **People** → **New User**
* They self-register by creating an account on your website or Athlete Portal
* They're created as part of a purchase or booking during checkout

In every case, CoachIQ needs the athlete to set a password before they can log in, so it sends them a link to do that right away.

## Why it looks like a password reset

The set-password email uses the same template as a password reset email, since both accomplish the same thing: letting someone create or update their password through a secure link. There's no separate "welcome" version of this email today.

This is why a coach or athlete who wasn't expecting it can mistake it for a sign that an account was compromised. It isn't; it's simply how every new account gets activated.

## Common questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="A new athlete got a password reset email right after signing up. Is that normal?">
    Yes. This is expected for every new account, whether you added the athlete or they signed up themselves. It's how CoachIQ prompts them to set their initial password, not a sign that their account or yours has been accessed by anyone else.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does this mean my account was hacked?">
    No. This email is sent automatically as part of normal account creation. It isn't triggered by a login attempt, a security event, or anyone requesting a reset on an existing account.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does every new athlete get this email, or only ones I add manually?">
    Every new account gets it, regardless of how it was created; manually by you, through self-registration, or during a purchase or booking.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What if the athlete never receives the email?">
    Have them check their spam folder first. If it's still missing, you can resend an invite from their profile in **People**. See [Helping Athletes with Login Issues](https://help.coachiq.io/help-center/helping-your-athlete/login-issues) for more troubleshooting steps.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can the email wording be changed to make this clearer?">
    Not currently; the set-password email uses the same template as a password reset. If this comes up often with your athletes, let your CoachIQ contact know.
